Relation between airways obstruction and CO2 tension in chronic obstructive airways disease.

چکیده
The relationship between the F.E.V.(1) as an index of airways obstruction and Pco(2) as an index of hypoventilation was investigated in 13 patients with chronic obstructive airways disease. Patients who had a normal Pco(2) despite severe airways obstruction retained relatively normal sensitivity to CO(2) as assessed by their "inspiratory mechanical work rate" response to CO(2). Others showed a raised Pco(2) in the presence of lesser degrees of airways obstruction and had reduced sensitivity to CO(2).

Relationship between sensitivity to carbon dioxide and clinical features in patients with chronic airways obstruction.
This study was designed to investigate the relationship between the different clinical features exhi, bited by patients with chronic airways obstruction and their responsiveness to carbon dioxide. In 19 patients pulmonary function was assessed by spirometry, lung volumes and arterial blood gases. Measurements of responsiveness to carbon dioxide were made and compared with responses obtained in f...
متن کاملAssessment of responsiveness to carbon dioxide in patients with chronic airways obstruction by rate of isometric inspiratory pressure development.
1. Responsiveness to CO2 was measured in forty patients with chronic airways obstruction in terms of ventilation and rate of isometric inspiratory pressure change [(dP/dt)max]. 2. The ventilatory response was below the normal range in eighteen out of twenty-two patients with normal arterial CO2 tensions and in all of eighteen patients with CO2 retention. 2. The (dP/dt)max. response was distribu...

A B S T R A C T The respiratory responses to hypercapnia alone and to hypercapnia and flow-resistive loading during inspiration were studied in normal individuals and in eucapnic and hypercapnic patients with chronic airways obstruction. Responses were assessed in terms of minute ventilation and occlusion pressure (mouth pressure during airway occlusion 100 ms after the onset of inspiration). V...
متن کاملCorrelation Between Upper Airways Obstructive Indexes in Adenotonsilar Hypertrophy with Mean Pulmonary Arterial Pressure
Introduction: Hypertrophied tonsils and adenoids may cause upper airway obstruction and cardio-pulmonary complications due to pulmonary arterial hypertension. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) and selected adenotonsilar hypertrophy indexes. Materials and Methods: Thirty two patients with upper-airway obstruction resulting ...
متن کاملTrends in mortality from chronic obstructive airways disease in the United Kingdom.
Chronic bronchitis, the so called English disease, has been declining as a cause of death throughout this century in all age groups and for both sexes. Recently concern has been expressed among epidemiologists that in Britain this rapidly declining mortality has suffered a setback: the trend has been reversed and the already substantial burden of chronic obstructive airways disease is going to ...
